I'm a passionate photographer, educator & the owner of Obscura Cameras in Ballarat. I’ve spent nearly 2 decades behind the lens photographing people, places & stories that matter. My work has taken me across the world, capturing moments from bustling cities to remote landscapes. It’s shaped how I see light, people & connection. When I’m not shooting, I run Ballarat’s only dedicated camera store where film photography, printmaking & community come together under one roof. I’m passionate about anything that tells a story, from a perfectly framed portrait to a piece of Rhodochrosite or Aquamarine that’s taken millions of years to form.
About Dave
Photography for me goes far beyond taking pictures. I teach, mentor & run workshops designed to help others fall in love with the craft. My projects often mix art, education & purpose, like The Uniform Project Turkana, which supports children’s education in Kenya. Whether I’m developing film, framing a fine art print or photographing a portrait, I approach it with the same care & curiosity. My business blends modern photography with old-world craftsmanship because the process matters just as much as the picture.
I keep things relaxed, natural & genuine. Photography should never feel forced. It’s about connection, conversation & trust. I take time to understand the person or story in front of me before I even lift the camera. My goal is simple: to create images that feel effortless yet deeply personal. Whether I’m photographing a wedding, a corporate portrait or a geological specimen, I bring the same calm energy & creative focus to every job.
