A recent 7NEWS story about a Ballarat wedding photographer got me thinking about this. The story reported complaints from 19 couples who said they were still waiting for some or all of the photography and video services they’d paid for. Collectively, almost $90,000 had reportedly been paid.
I’m not going to comment on that photographer or what’s happened. There are two sides to most stories and it’s not my place to judge someone else’s business.
But it does raise a bloody important question.
How do you know who you’re trusting with your wedding photographs?
Wedding photography isn’t a side hustle for me
I’m David Bailey. I’m a professional photographer here in Ballarat and I’ve photographed more than 175 weddings over the past 16+ years.
I also own and run Obscura Cameras, Ballarat and Western Victoria’s only dedicated camera store.
So photography isn’t something I squeeze in around another job.
It’s what I do.
On a Saturday I might be photographing a wedding. During the week I’m behind the counter talking cameras, printing photographs, developing film, teaching photography or working on images for clients.
I’ve pretty much built my working life around photography.
Does owning a camera shop automatically make me a great wedding photographer? Of course not.
But 175+ weddings certainly teaches you a few things.
The photos are only part of the job
When couples look for a wedding photographer, naturally they look at photographs.
You should. If you don’t love someone’s work, don’t book them.
But there’s a whole other side of wedding photography that you won’t necessarily see on Instagram.
What happens when it rains?
What happens when the ceremony starts 45 minutes late and suddenly the beautiful hour we’d planned for photographs becomes 20 minutes?
What happens when the light is awful?
What happens when a camera decides it doesn’t want to play anymore?
Or when Uncle Bob disappears just as we’re trying to photograph the entire family?
I’ve had beautiful sunny weddings, freezing weddings, wet weddings, weddings running perfectly to schedule and weddings where the schedule basically went out the window before lunch.
After more than 175 of them, you learn to adapt.
Most importantly, you learn how to deal with problems without turning them into the couple’s problems.
You can’t photograph a wedding again next Tuesday
This is the part I think sometimes gets forgotten.
If something goes wrong during a portrait session, we can usually fix it. We can reschedule. We can take another photograph.
A wedding is different.
The kiss happened.
Dad’s speech happened.
Nan was there.
Everyone laughed at something completely ridiculous during the bridal party photos.
Those moments are gone.
That’s why professional equipment matters. Backup equipment matters. Looking after files matters. Having proper systems matters.
It’s also why the person behind the camera matters.
You’re not simply paying someone to press a shutter button for a few hours. You’re trusting them with the record of a day that can’t be repeated.

Before booking any wedding photographer
Ask one simple question: How established are they?
Look beyond Instagram followers and beautiful Reels. How many weddings have they photographed? How long have they been in business? Do they have independent reviews, backup equipment, clear agreements and realistic delivery times?
And one question couples probably don’t think about:
If you need them six months after your wedding, can you still find them?
